Two for One

Link: A Year Abroad (or 3) as a Career Move – New York Times.

I was so psyched to read the front-center WorldTeach reference (and then to blog it) that I almost didn’t read the second page of this article, where I had the secondary surprise of seeing a quote from my former New York supervisor (…American Samoa…), who I always admired despite prevailing winds.

Possibly more interesting is that, by one count, only 35,000 American, post- college students move overseas to work (vs. 191,000 who go abroad to study). I don’t know what the per capita, country-breakdown percentages are but that sounds so tiny as compared to the massive number of Europeans and Australians I meet everywhere. An inverse statistic might be Norway’s 2006 Winter Olympic performance (19 Medals for a country of 4 million. Comparitively, if they were the size of the U.S., they would have won 1223 medals. Hurray for groundless statistical manipulation! But seriously, how can such a tiny country win so many medals? Congratulations also to Sweden for outclassing the Suomis in hockey last night. It is my belief they rose to victory based upon the singlehanded support of a fan name Oscar) Anyway, I’m happy to be among that 35k.

Mostly, of course, I like this article because it justifies views I already hold, and who doesn’t enjoy having their ego stroked by a major news publication?
