I don’t mean to co-opt others’ stories, so I’ll leave the players anonymous, but I want to issue a resident’s report about a drugging/mugging that took place on Friday at Blue Frog bar on Maoming Lu in Shanghai.
While the rest of our troup enjoyed Mont Blanc’s 100th anniversary shennanigans at the city’s largest movie lot, a friend of a friend was passed out for 40 hours at his hotel room where a man-woman team (aged roughly 45 and 25) of "Singaporean" nationals had taken him after he was dosed, and robbed him of cash and computer. They had the decency to leave his passport.
He was a party no-show and a mystery of non-communication until he woke up dizzy and confused at 6 o’clock Sunday evening and called in his story. Kindly friends picked him up and took in the tale over some much needed food.
Evidently, the two Singaporeans had offered the victim a beer as a friendly introductory gesture following a minor seating related altercation with another patron. One beer led to two, the third beer tasted funny after the loo and woosh, it was Sunday.
They’re at the police station going through the necessary but futile motions of reporting the incident and ensuring proper documentation for banking authorities, etc. It’s doubtful he’ll get compensation, and will almost certainly not retrieve the information from his laptop.
Be careful of strangers bearing strange brew.
